Manukau Institute of Technology

Project overview

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) moved into their new $100m campus in Manukau in June 2014 after an extensive three-year build programme. The 20,000 sq mtr building houses the Facility of Business, IT & Logistics with closed classrooms, open teaching spaces, staffrooms, student breakout and self-learning lounges. The campus sits atop the Manukau Railway Station, which opens to an expansive atrium and public space, with the view to transforming the CBD.

Solution

Vidak’s engagement began two years prior to completion, collaborating with MIT designers and project teams to deliver the ultimate student environment. Table shapes and configurations were tested to facilitate an agile and robust mix of learning spaces to withstand the rigors of student life and to support technology.

Extensive time was spent developing soft seating, meeting container booths, screening and occasional furniture to create three levels of modern, dynamic student breakout spaces. Staff lunchrooms on each level were developed as a cafe style getaway for teaching and admin staff, along with full fit out of the library, incorporating interactive booths, high back quiet seating and trestle tables.
